Amii is an independent non-profit and one of Canada's three national AI institutes under the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy. It began in 2002 as a University of Alberta and Government of Alberta initiative and rebranded as Amii in 2017. It funds research fellows and Canada CIFAR AI Chairs, and it sells AI strategy, custom machine-learning projects and training to companies from startups to large enterprises. It is funded by the Government of Canada and CIFAR, by Alberta Innovates, and by grants, industry partnerships, sponsorships and fee-for-service work. Alberta Innovates committed $30M in 2023, and a $50M CAD provincial investment over five years was announced in July 2026. Third-party sources put headcount at roughly 100–150.
