Karya runs a mobile-first platform that splits large AI data projects, such as speech data in Indian languages, into microtasks for low-income rural workers. Clients include Microsoft, Google and other tech companies and universities. Karya sells the data at market rates, pays workers about $5 an hour, and passes resale revenue back to them. It spun out of Microsoft Research India in 2021–22 and operates as a nonprofit. Its platform has reached about 50,000 workers across all 28 Indian states and 42M+ paid tasks. Funding is grant-based, including a $1M Google.org grant in 2024. Tracxn lists its operating entity's revenue at ₹10–50 Cr for FY2025.
