Outlier is a platform operated by Scale AI. It pays freelance contributors, including coders, mathematicians, scientists, writers, lawyers and clinicians, to rate, write and correct data for generative AI models (RLHF, evaluation). Scale launched it in 2023 and sells the resulting training data to AI developers and enterprises. Forbes reported in 2025 that Outlier had hundreds of thousands of contributors. Outlier's own revenue isn't broken out. Parent Scale AI reported about $1B in annualized revenue in 2024 and was valued at roughly $29B after Meta paid $14.3B for a 49% non-voting stake in June 2025.
