Nvidia buys Hugging Face for $12.93B, taking the hub for 3M open models in-house

Nvidia confirmed on September 3 that it is acquiring Hugging Face for $12.93B, with the deal closing immediately. Hugging Face hosts about 3 million models and serves roughly 18 million developers; Jensen Huang said it will stay an open platform for the whole ecosystem. For builders the question is what changes when the default home for open weights is owned by the company that sells the GPUs they run on — expect tighter NIM and inference packaging, and watch the open-model licensing terms.
