Runway raises $315M Series E at $5.3B led by General Atlantic
The round was announced on February 10 and was General Atlantic's second consecutive lead. The firm also led a $308M round about ten months earlier, at a valuation of roughly $3B. Other backers include AllianceBernstein, Adobe Ventures, AMD Ventures, Mirae Asset, Emphatic Capital and Premji Invest. The money is earmarked for pretraining the next generation of world models and for growing a team of about 140 people across research, engineering and go-to-market. Runway recently signed a compute deal with CoreWeave, and its latest video model, Gen-4.5, shipped in December. Its move from video generation toward simulating physical environments puts it up against World Labs, Google DeepMind and Luma AI. Luma raised $900M last November at a $4B valuation. Total funding now stands at roughly $860M, per Implicator's tally. For founders, the signal is that capital in generative media is flowing to teams that pair a model roadmap with secured compute. Nvidia and AMD both invested through their venture arms, so chip suppliers are acting as financiers of their own customers. Video startups that stay at the application layer will have to show why they hold up against labs funded to pretrain much larger models.
