Descript sells a collaborative audio and video editor that transcribes media so users can edit it like a document. It includes an AI co-editor called Underlord, screen recording, and hosted publishing. Customers range from individual creators and podcasters to marketing and business teams, and it is reported to have more than seven million users. It uses a freemium subscription model. Founded in 2017 by Andrew Mason, it has raised about $100M in total, including a $50M Series C led by OpenAI's Startup Fund in 2022 at a reported $550M valuation. In 2026 it released an open beta API.
