Safe Superintelligence raises $5B with Nvidia
Nvidia announced the investment on July 27, 2026. The roughly $5 billion figure comes from a person briefed on the deal, and neither company has confirmed it. Nvidia is the only investor named. The lab plans to use Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform to raise its computing capacity tenfold over the following 12 months. Nvidia said the deal gives it rare access into the company's closely guarded research. The deal also changes SSI's hardware base. The lab has historically relied on Google's TPUs. It had raised roughly $3 billion from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia and DST Global, and was reportedly valued at $32 billion last year. Crunchbase ranks it alongside Databricks as the largest round of Q3, at $5 billion each. Some observers have criticized Nvidia for acting as both financier and hardware supplier. For AI founders, the lesson is that frontier-scale capital is increasingly tied to a chip vendor's own supply. A lab with no product can still get billions if a compute supplier wants a stake and a view into the research. The cost is dependence on one vendor, and an equity partner that is also the main supplier. Founders raising for compute should weigh that trade-off in their own negotiations.
