AI specialty insurer Ledgebrook raises $200M co-led by Allianz X and Rockefeller Capital Management

The primary equity round also included unnamed existing and new investors, and no valuation was disclosed. Crunchbase data puts total funding for the Boston company at about $315M. In August, AM Best gave its insurance unit an A- financial strength rating, completing its shift to a full-stack carrier. Actuary Gage Caligaris founded Ledgebrook in 2022. It writes general liability, professional liability and specialty cover for mid-sized US businesses in the excess and surplus market, selling only through wholesale brokers. Its Blackbird platform reads submissions, classifies risks and sets technical pricing, and human underwriters make the final call. The company employs about 300 people, including roughly 80 underwriters and 50 engineers. For founders, Ledgebrook makes the case for owning the regulated insurance risk rather than selling software to carriers. Strategic insurers are now funding AI that triages complex, hard-to-place risks while humans keep the final decision.
