Anthropic licenses Opaque's confidential-computing technology and hires part of its team
An Anthropic spokesperson confirmed the agreement to The Information, declining to give terms or the number of Opaque engineers joining. Opaque Systems is five years old and sells software that secures confidential data for use with AI agents. Constellation Research and Dealroom described it as an acquisition, but the structure is a technology license plus acqui-hire, not a full purchase of the company. Opaque had worked with Nvidia, Intel, Microsoft and Google on confidential computing and had expanded into confidential AI. No revenue has been reported, so the figure shown is a Lounge estimate. Anthropic has used similar team-and-license structures before, including with the Runhouse team earlier this year. For AI builders, the move signals that frontier labs want built-in guarantees on data handling to win regulated enterprise customers. Confidential-AI startups now face a labs-as-acquirer exit path, and customers will increasingly expect verifiable data isolation from model providers rather than treating it as an add-on.
