Healthleap raises $38M from Sequoia, First Round and Hummingbird for inpatient risk screening AI
The total is an $8M seed co-led by Sequoia Capital and First Round Capital and a $30M Series A led by Hummingbird Ventures. Valuation was not disclosed. Siblings Jemima and Josiah Meyer founded the company in South Africa in 2022. It began with a clinical nutrition tool for dietitians before moving into broader inpatient screening. Healthleap connects to hospital health record systems and uses language models each night to read clinician notes for signals such as weight loss or trouble swallowing. It combines these with labs and vitals into a risk score that care teams see each morning. Malnutrition and delirium screening is live. Models for aspiration pneumonia, pressure ulcers and heart failure readmission are still in clinical validation. The software flags patients for review and does not diagnose. For builders, the lesson is the starting point. A condition that is often missed and costly gave Healthleap a narrow way into hospital workflows before it grew into several conditions. Unstructured clinical notes are still a largely untapped source of signal.
