Navion Neurosciences raises $10.8M Seed
The $10.8M is a first closing, led by the Angelini Lumira Biosciences Fund, with 3B Future Health Fund, UVA LVG Seed Fund, Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation, VTC Innovation Fund and Navion management also participating. Valuation was not disclosed. Proceeds go to the lead programs in genetic epilepsy and chronic neuropathic pain, and to further development of the NaViGATion platform. Navion is a preclinical-stage company. NaViGATion combines chemistry, structural biology, human disease biology and ion-channel expertise, with AI used to discover and optimize sodium-channel therapeutics. The aim is to address a known weakness of the drug class. Traditional agents suppress sodium-channel function broadly, which has limited their clinical use in both epilepsy and pain. Members of the leadership team previously built Cavion, an ion-channel company that Jazz Pharmaceuticals acquired in 2019. The company is based at the Commonwealth Bio Accelerator in Charlottesville, Virginia. For founders building AI drug discovery companies, the round shows what early investors are paying for. The lead investor cited the team's track record in ion channels alongside its use of AI-enabled tools. Domain expertise and a specific target class came first, with the AI platform as a supporting factor. A seed of this size also leaves a long preclinical road ahead, so the next financing will probably depend on data from the lead programs, not on the platform alone.
