Origin exits stealth with $20M to put drywall-finishing robots on construction sites
Origin, a San Francisco company founded in 2025 by Yogesh Ghaturle, Ashish Daga and Tushar Makkar, disclosed the $20M as cumulative funding at its public launch, so the size of the latest tranche is not broken out. Accel and Zacua Ventures co-led, joined by Unilazer Ventures, Schema Ventures, Z21, ISAI and Imad Ventures, plus angels tied to Anduril, Skild AI, 1X and Tesla. The first product, OG-1, applies finishing compound and sands walls during interior drywall work. The company claims up to three times the speed of human crews at comparable quality, a figure that has not been independently verified. Origin sells through a robots-as-a-service model, has begun site deployments and plans pilots with contractors in the US and Europe. Construction is a harder setting than a factory because surfaces and layouts change daily, which is why few autonomous systems have reached job sites at scale. For builders in physical AI, the signal is that investors are backing narrow, task-specific robots sold as a service rather than general-purpose humanoids. Proof will come from completed projects, maintenance costs and contractor economics, not demos.
