Google completes $1.5B acqui-hire of AI coding startup Mechanize
Google structured the Mechanize agreement as an acqui-hire rather than a full corporate merger, absorbing the core team into Google DeepMind. BusinessChief reported the value at more than $1.5 billion, which it described as over three times the startup's estimated prior worth. Co-founder Tamay Besiroglu will lead Google's AI workforce strategy in the new role. Earlier coverage had described the $1.5 billion figure as a possible spend on a startup of about 35 people before the deal was completed. Google has used similar talent structures to add AI coding capability, and the Mechanize team was focused on improving how models write and modify code. For founders, acqui-hire deals at this scale show that a small research team with proven model training workflows can be priced as strategic talent. Teams that want that outcome should document their methods and keep a clear record of who built each part of the system.
