Altman: the world 'should accept some bad things' from AI; says OpenAI and Anthropic still differ sharply on rules
In the debut edition of Politico's Decoded newsletter, Sam Altman said OpenAI believes the world should accept some harms such as hacks and scams in exchange for the benefits and agency the technology gives people, and declined to promise AI would be free of misuse. He said OpenAI and Anthropic still differ significantly on AI regulation and called the idea of a single lab controlling AI an unacceptable trade-off; an Anthropic spokesperson responded that its proposed rules apply only to frontier models. The comments land the same day frontier-lab executives testify before the New York City Council, and they frame the regulatory fight that will shape what model providers can ship.
