Huawei and Qualcomm sign a multi-year patent cross-license covering 5G, compute and AI

Huawei announced a broad multi-year patent agreement with Qualcomm spanning 5G, compute, AI and networking on FRAND terms, under which Qualcomm will also buy a selection of Huawei's US patents in compute, AI and networking; the deal still needs regulatory approval. Reuters notes it is Huawei's first 5G patent deal with Qualcomm and pushes the cumulative value of Huawei's licensing agreements past $6.9B, following a similar deal with HP in August. A rare piece of US–China chip IP détente in the middle of export-control tensions, it reduces one source of litigation risk for devices and edge-AI hardware that mix both companies' technology.
