Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Meta face NYC Council hearing on AI risk alongside three lab whistleblowers
The full New York City Council is holding a hearing today with policy and safety officials from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Meta, after subpoenaing SpaceX's AI unit when it ignored a request to appear. Witnesses include former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, ex-DeepMind researcher Alex Turner and ex-OpenAI researcher Daniel Kokotajlo. Proposals on the table include whistleblower bounties funded from penalties, a private right of action for New Yorkers harmed by AI systems, and independent audits before city deployment. It is the first municipal body to compel frontier-lab testimony, and the liability ideas would directly affect anyone deploying agents in the city.
