OpenAI's first teen usage report says the average teen spends under 15 minutes a day on ChatGPT
OpenAI says that in nearly half of teen chats where a break reminder appeared, the user took a break or left within five minutes. Teens with the dedicated teen experience sent more education-related messages and used Study Mode and learning visualizations more. OpenAI is also building a college application planner that tracks requirements, deadlines and financial aid steps. ChatGPT for Teens launched in August. It switches on when age data or OpenAI's age estimate puts a user under 18, and it adds parental controls. The report came out the same day Common Sense Media rated the teen mode an unacceptable risk. A spokesperson said much of that group's testing may have happened before parental controls were fully active. Meta agreed in August to pay up to $18 billion to settle claims about teen addiction. For consumer AI startups, teen safety is now judged with published usage metrics and outside audits. Age estimation, break prompts and parent alerts are becoming basic requirements.
