Reservoir Media Sues Anthropic and Suno Over Music Used in AI Training
Reservoir filed two copyright and DMCA complaints on October 22 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The Suno case argues that the company trained on protected recordings without a license, and it points to Suno's licensing deals with Warner Music, BMG and Believe as proof that a market for training data already exists. Anthropic is named as a defendant in its own separate suit, and the filings name the companies rather than their executives. Reported combined damages across the two cases approach $340 million. The suits add to a growing list of music industry claims against AI developers, and Suno already faces several other complaints from rights holders. For a team building an AI product, the case is a reminder that training data provenance can become a legal and cost problem. Founders shipping music, voice or media features should document the licensing behind any training or fine-tuning data and ask their model vendors how they handle the same exposure.
