History and team

Omidyar Network was founded in 2004 by Pierre and Pam Omidyar, and it set up an operation in India in 2010 to invest in Indian start-ups. Crunchbase lists Abhirup Sarkar as a founder of the India entity, and Tracxn reports a team of nine, including three partners. In July 2023 the firm reported about $673 million in cumulative assets under management in India. In 2018, Roopa Kudva, then India partner and managing director, described the India strategy as a roughly $250 million fund, with about 30% in grants and the rest in equity. In December 2023 the firm said it would make no more investments in India and would wind down its India operations by the end of 2024. Trackers still list participation in some 2025 rounds, including Vedantu in September 2025 and HexaHealth's Series A in April 2025.

AI investing

IPO Platform lists the India firm among investors in SatSure, an AI-tagged spacetech company, in a $15 million round published in August 2023. The firm's public portfolio lists are otherwise mostly fintech, edtech, consumer and agritech companies. Separately, the global Omidyar Network, which is distinct from the India entity, led a group of philanthropies that invested in Anthropic in 2024. Founders should not read that deal as a signal about the India team's current activity.

Stages and check sizes

Tracxn records the firm's past investments by stage: 34 seed investments with an average round size of $1.97 million, 31 Series A investments averaging $5.92 million, and 14 Series B investments averaging $11.3 million. These are round sizes, not the firm's own check sizes, which are not public. Tracxn describes the firm as primarily investing at Series A. Because the firm announced it would make no more India investments, these stage figures describe past activity only.
