Anthropic's internal data: junior technical hiring fell from 27% to 9% as agent hours hit 6 to 1
Anthropic's economics team analyzed internal employment, AI usage, output, survey and calendar data plus 17 employee interviews. The share of junior staff in technical departments slipped from 21% to 14% since early 2025, and the junior share of technical hires dropped from 27% to 9%. Interactive AI agent hours outnumbered employee hours six to one by August, and code commits per engineer rose to five times their pace of six months earlier. Following the same employees over time, output rose as they adopted coding agents. The report names human attention as the new bottleneck: even non-technical staff would need about half their work week to read all their agents' output, so they spend time on monitoring and visibility tools. Hiring managers now stress autonomy and judgment over specific technical expertise. Anthropic says it has built an early warning system for at-risk jobs and prioritizes internal redeployment. For founders, this is an early look at how an agent-heavy team works: fewer entry-level hires, more review and orchestration load, and a premium on people who can direct agents.
