The Formula for Agentic AI Value (BCG, September 2026): agents now deliver 22% of AI value, heading to 39% by 2030
BCG's 2026 Applied AI Index, built on a survey of more than 1,300 CxOs and senior executives across 20 plus sectors, finds that almost half of companies now generate measurable value from AI, but the gains are concentrated. Only 7.5% qualify as future-built, another 41% are scaling, and the rest are emerging or stagnating. Companies that pair strategic clarity with applied AI capture five times the value of those lacking both, and future-built firms grow their top line 2.4 times faster than the bottom half. AI spending has climbed from about 1% of revenue in early 2025 to 3.3%, with roughly 80% sitting outside the IT budget. Agents already account for 22% of total AI value and BCG expects 39% by 2030, yet only 5% of companies have the full set of controls needed for autonomous agents. For founders, the report describes the buyer: enterprises that measure AI in the P&L, run a single multiyear program, and want agent controls and workflow redesign, not point tools.
