About Mike Krieger

Background

Mike Krieger (Michel Krieger) was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and studied at Stanford University. He co-founded Instagram with Kevin Systrom in 2010 and was its CTO until 2018. Instagram grew from a few million users to 1 billion monthly active users during that period.

After leaving Meta, he co-launched Rt.live and then Artifact, an AI-powered news app. Artifact shut down in January 2024 and its technology was sold to Yahoo in April 2024.

He joined Anthropic in May 2024 as its first Chief Product Officer, leading product engineering, management and design. PitchBook now lists him as a Member of Technical Staff, and Hustle Fund reports that he co-leads Anthropic's internal Labs incubator as of January 2026. He joined the Figma board in July 2025 and is listed as an advisor at SignalFire.

Angel investing track record

Data providers count roughly 40 personal investments: PitchBook lists 43 and Crunchbase lists 41. Tracxn lists 23 and other aggregators list fewer, so counts differ by source.

The Browser Company (May 2021) and mmhmm (July 2020 seed) are among his earlier angel deals. Crunchbase also records Polywork (2021), Locket Labs (2022), incident.io (2022 and again in its April 2025 Series B) and Portola (2025). NFX Signal also lists a 2017 Series A in Prefer.

AI investments

Crunchbase's timeline shows several AI-related rounds, with dates as given by Crunchbase:

ElevenLabs (June 2023), Granola (April 2023), Openlayer (May 2023), Codegen (November 2023), Udio (April 2024 seed) and CodeCrafters (November 2024 seed).

These came before and during his time at Anthropic. Founders should not assume Anthropic is involved in any of these deals.

Investment focus

Data aggregators describe him as a pre-seed and seed angel. Tracxn lists enterprise applications and consumer as his top sectors, and the United States and United Kingdom as top locations. Another directory lists AI, consumer technology and productivity software.

NFX Signal lists an investment range of $5K to $50K with a $25K sweet spot. This comes from a third-party profile, not a statement from Krieger. We found no public statement from him on what he looks for in pitches.
