About Lenny Rachitsky
Lenny Rachitsky is a software engineer and product leader who now writes Lenny's Newsletter and hosts a related podcast. He co-founded Localmind and served as its CEO. Airbnb acquired the company in 2012.
He stayed on at Airbnb for about seven years. He joined as a product manager working on guest conversion and host quality. In 2016 he became product lead for supply growth, where he led a team of five product managers and managed more than 80 engineers, data scientists and designers. He left in 2019 as the leader of the team responsible for getting consumers to book on the platform.
After Airbnb he started Lenny's Newsletter, which covers product, growth and careers. Fast Company describes it as one of the top five newsletters on Substack. His personal site describes him as an author, podcast host and angel investor. Crunchbase lists him as based in the United States and records no companies founded by him as a separate entry beyond Localmind.
Rachitsky invests his own money as an individual angel. In his newsletter post "Lessons from 140+ angel investments", he wrote that over the previous five years he had angel invested in more than 140 companies. He said twelve had become unicorns and ten more were on track to get there that year. The post is undated in the version we reviewed, so treat those counts as a snapshot.
Tracker counts differ because each database covers different deals. Crunchbase's public summary shows 35 investments in the data supplied to Lounge, and the live Crunchbase page now shows a higher figure. PitchBook lists 149 investments. Founders should treat his own count of 140+ as the best guide to volume.
He has written openly about how he approaches the work. He says he is usually wrong about which investments will do best: only a third of his best investments were ones he rated "Great" at the time. He also argues that access to deals matters more than picking, and that angels tend to do best by investing in every credible deal, with a similar check size each time.
Crunchbase shows 25 AI investments since 2023. The AI portfolio on Crunchbase includes Bezi, Tempo, Patterns, Outsmart Education, LlamaIndex, TrueFoundry, Cove, Oboe, Monogram, Vultron, daydream Labs and Flux.
Other public trackers add dated rounds. Tracxn lists a LlamaIndex seed round on June 6, 2023. Crunchbase records Patterns raising on March 9, 2023, with Rachitsky and Y Combinator named as investors. NFX Signal lists these rounds with him on record: TrueFoundry Series A (February 2025), Fyxer AI Series A (March 2025), Granola Series B (May 2025), Delphi Series A (June 2025), Tempo seed (October 2025), and Oboe Series A (December 2025). It also lists Simular, with a seed in June 2024 and a Series A in December 2025. These dates are the rounds in which he is recorded as an investor. They are not always the date of his own check.
On his personal site he says he actively angel invests in AI, B2B SaaS, marketplaces, platforms and remarkable consumer products. Third-party profiles describe his activity as spanning pre-seed through Series B. Most of the deals listed on NFX Signal are seed and Series A rounds. Tracxn lists portfolio companies mainly in the United States, with some in Canada and other countries.
He has not published a check size that we could find. NFX Signal lists an investment range of $100K to $10M and a "sweet spot" of $1M. That is a third-party listing and may reflect round sizes rather than his own checks, so founders should not treat it as a stated check size. His own writing says he favors a consistent check size across deals, and that two of his largest markups came from his smallest checks.
He has also said he often lacks full conviction at the time of investing. He treats a credible path to a very large outcome as enough reason to invest, and he asks founders whether they want more angels so he can suggest co-investors.
