About Norman Packard

Background

Norman Packard is a chaos theory physicist. He has a BA in physics from Reed College and a PhD in physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz (1976 to 1982, per Crunchbase). In 1982 he won a NATO postdoctoral fellowship. He is known for work on chaos theory, complex systems and artificial life.

He co-founded Prediction Company in 1991, which used learning algorithms and statistical models to predict financial markets. Per the daptics site, he was CEO from 1997 to 2003 and then chairman. UBS acquired the company in 2005. He then co-founded ProtoLife, later renamed daptics, in 2004 and served as its CEO.

From July 2011 to May 2013 he was Chief Science Officer at Lucky Sort, a big data visualization startup. Since January 2020 he has been Chief Science Officer at 3852.ai. Crunchbase lists him in San Francisco.

Angel investing track record

Crunchbase lists one personal investment: the Lucky Sort seed round, announced April 1, 2012. It lists no lead investments and one exit, which is Lucky Sort. TechCrunch reported that Lucky Sort had raised a half-million seed round from Neu Venture Capital, Invite Investments and several angels, including Packard. Twitter acquired Lucky Sort in May 2013.

Crunchbase classifies him as an individual/angel investor at the seed stage. No other angel investments are publicly documented.

AI investments

Lucky Sort built software for exploring patterns in live text streams. Crunchbase and TechCrunch describe it as a data visualization and navigation product, and Packard was its chief science officer as well as an investor. No other AI investments by Packard are public.

Investment focus

Public data is thin. Crunchbase lists his investor stage as seed, and his one recorded investment was in a data and analytics startup. He has not published a thesis, a check size or a list of sectors. His operating work covers predictive modeling and machine learning in finance and, at 3852.ai, in health care. Founders with technical, data-heavy products may find that background relevant, but it is not a stated investment focus.
