About Richard Socher

Background

Richard Socher is based in Palo Alto, CA. He completed a PhD in computer science at Stanford and was an adjunct professor there. His research covers natural language processing and deep learning.

He was CEO and CTO of the AI startup MetaMind, which Salesforce acquired in April 2016. At Salesforce he was chief scientist and EVP until 2020, leading work on research, search, customer service automation and a shared AI platform.

In 2020 he founded You.com, which he now describes as search, data and LLM infrastructure for AI agents. He is also co-founder and CEO of Recursive, which is building self-improving AI to automate scientific discovery. In 2021 he co-founded AIX Ventures with Shaun Johnson.

Angel investing track record

Socher began investing personally before AIX existed. One profile says his angel portfolio dates to 2016. PitchBook lists him as an angel with 24 investments, and Crunchbase lists 16 personal investments. The counts differ by database, so treat them as approximate.

He has also advised companies, including Profluent and Zebra Medical Vision. He is a board observer and advisor at Ellipsis Health.

AI investments

AIX Ventures is run by AI practitioners. Its investing partners include Socher, Christopher Manning, Pieter Abbeel and Anthony Goldbloom. Socher's LinkedIn says AIX had invested in 7 seed rounds of companies that are now unicorns as of 2025.

Investment focus

Socher invests mainly in early-stage AI companies. AIX is described as focused on pre-seed, seed and Series A, in AI-native companies where AI is the core product. NFX Signal ranks him in AI, developer tools, biotech, digital health and SaaS at pre-seed and seed. Most listed activity is in the United States.

He has not published a personal check size that we could find. NFX Signal shows an investment range of $500K to $2.0M. Third-party listings for AIX give figures from $100K to $1M and $750K to $3M, and these sources disagree. Confirm directly before relying on any of them.
