Google's Universal Cart goes live in the US across Search and the Gemini app

Universal Cart lets shoppers save products from multiple retailers in one place, whether found in Google Search or the Gemini app, and keeps the items and shopping progress when they return. It sends alerts when a saved item drops in price or comes back in stock, factors in credit card perks when suggesting how to pay, and surfaces promo codes. Google announced the US availability on Thursday, Oct. 15. Checkout is tied to the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard Google introduced earlier this year to let AI agents and retailers work together across discovery and purchase. The cart joins conversational product discovery in AI Mode and the Let Google Call tool, which uses an agent to check store stock by phone. Amazon and OpenAI have also added agentic shopping features. For founders building commerce or agent products, the signal is that Google is placing a persistent, cross-merchant cart inside its two biggest surfaces and pushing UCP as the integration layer. Retailers and agent builders will have to decide whether to support that standard.
