OpenCode 2.0: The open source AI coding agent
Release 1.19.0, dated October 11, adds an upgrade route to version 2 through the `opencode upgrade --major` command. Both generations use the same `opencode` command, so they cannot be installed side by side under the default name. Docker images for v2 carry versioned tags, such as 2.0.0. The project is built by Anomaly, formerly the SST team. Its GitHub repository now shows about 213k stars and 28.6k forks. The tool launched in June 2025 and grew quickly. In January 2026, Anthropic blocked OpenCode, Cline and Roo Code from using Claude subscription OAuth tokens, and the project reportedly gained 18,000 stars within two weeks. Usage figures vary by source. One community guide cites 8M monthly users by the founder's count. Another source says the home page claimed over 16M on October 1. Revenue comes from optional paid products. These include the pay-as-you-go Zen model gateway and the OpenCode Go subscription. For AI founders, OpenCode shows that a free, MIT-licensed harness can reach very large adoption by staying model-agnostic. The business sits in hosted inference, not the agent. Teams building on closed coding agents face a switching option with real scale. Teams building developer tools face a competitor that treats the agent layer as free.
