Energy Department lends Constellation $5B to uprate eight nuclear plants

The loans support eight power plants and would add 1.1 gigawatts, mostly by raising output at existing reactors through higher-enriched fuel and equipment upgrades. Constellation says it already committed more than $7 billion to add 1,080 megawatts for Google, Amazon and Meta, and it expects the financing to lower borrowing costs. The loan commitment has not been finalized, and the company's press release does not say whether electricity prices for households will change. The deal shows federal money moving into the power supply that data centers depend on, with the financing attached to plants whose added output is already contracted to hyperscalers. Seven of the eight facilities are tied to those buyers, which means the capacity is spoken for before it exists. For teams building AI products, electricity access and long-term power contracts are becoming limits on how much compute can be deployed. Capacity plans should account for grid timing and power cost, not only the availability of accelerators.
