OpenAI puts ex-xAI infrastructure chief Uday Ruddarraju in charge of compute as Sachin Katti steps down

Sachin Katti, who joined OpenAI from Intel late last year and took over Stargate in March, will leave the infrastructure and compute role after November 15, CNBC reported. Uday Ruddarraju, CTO of compute since July, takes over the whole compute organization. Bloomberg reported that Ruddarraju ran infrastructure at xAI until July 2025 and worked on the Grok 3 training run across 100,000 GPUs. Katti said the capacity he secured amounts to double-digit gigawatts, spread across Nvidia, Broadcom, AMD, Oracle, Microsoft, Google, AWS and CoreWeave. His GPT-Infra effort moves to chip chief Richard Ho. The exit follows a run of senior departures. Fidji Simo moved into an advisory role in July, and Brad Lightcap and Denise Dresser left in August. Katti oversaw the $30B Georgia site and an 8-gigawatt Ohio project. For founders who depend on OpenAI capacity, the supplier relationships are what to watch. Ruddarraju said he will now spend more time on the commercial side, and the business leaders under Katti keep their jobs, which points to continuity in supplier deals.
