Prioritize the backlog with RICE
Scores a list of features on reach, impact, confidence and effort, and explains the top five.
Use it when
The backlog is long and every request feels urgent.
What you fill in
- items Backlog items with any data you have (requests, users affected, effort guesses)
- goal The metric this quarter is about
The prompt
Prioritize this backlog for the goal: goal Items: items For each item estimate Reach (users per quarter), Impact (0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 3), Confidence (50%, 80%, 100%) and Effort (person-weeks), then RICE = R × I × C ÷ E. Output a table sorted by RICE, with one line justifying each estimate. Then: the top 5 with why they win; 3 items that score low but might be strategic, and why; and anything that should be deleted outright. Mark every estimate that is a guess with "(guess)" and say what data would firm it up. Before you answer, check your draft against every instruction above and fix anything that misses.
Why it works
- Uses a known formula so scores are comparable.
- Marks guesses explicitly.
- Leaves room for strategic exceptions instead of hiding them.
