Automattic is a privately held, fully distributed company founded in 2005 by WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg. It's best known for WordPress.com and for contributing to open-source WordPress. Its other products include WooCommerce, Tumblr, Jetpack, Akismet, Gravatar, Day One, Pocket Casts, Simplenote, Beeper and Parse.ly. It earns money mainly through subscriptions, hosting (including WordPress VIP for enterprises), commerce extensions and premium add-ons. Tracxn lists its latest valuation as $7.5B as of December 31, 2025, which matches the figure from its 2021 Series E round. Wikipedia reports about 1,479 employees in 2025.
