About Adam D'Angelo

Background

Adam D'Angelo is an American internet entrepreneur based in Mountain View, California. He studied at Caltech and attended Phillips Exeter Academy. He joined Facebook shortly after its 2004 launch. He was its chief technology officer from 2006 to 2008 and then vice president of engineering until he left in 2008.

In June 2009 he co-founded Quora with Charlie Cheever, a former Facebook engineer. D'Angelo has stayed on as CEO, and Cheever stepped back from active management in 2012. In May 2012 D'Angelo put $20 million of his own money into Quora's $50 million Series B round.

In December 2022 Quora launched Poe, a standalone app for chatting with multiple AI models and bots. He has said the team started building it inside Quora, then spun it out as its own app. D'Angelo joined OpenAI's board in 2018 and is also on the board of Asana. In November 2023 he was one of four board members who voted to remove Sam Altman as OpenAI CEO. He was the only one of the original six board members to remain after Altman returned.

Angel investing track record

Crunchbase counts 26 investments for D'Angelo, with 0 lead investments, 0 exits and 0 companies founded. Other databases report different totals. Dealroom lists 57 investments and PitchBook lists 74, and these figures depend on how each service counts rounds and follow-ons. PitchBook classifies him as an angel investor and also lists him as a limited partner at Diagram Ventures.

His dated deals are mostly 2023 and later. Crunchbase's activity timeline shows him in rounds for DatologyAI (February 2024), MatX (November 2024), Mercor (September 2024), Lovable (February 2025) and Town (March 2025). It also shows Oboe (December 2025), and Mechanize, Espa and roomix (spring 2026). In most of these he appears as one of several investors, and Crunchbase shows no lead roles for him.

AI investments

Crunchbase records 25 AI investments since 2023. The AI portfolio it lists includes Lovable, Argn, roomix, Outsmart Education, DatologyAI, Outsmart, Fennel AI, Protege, Mercor, Oboe, Matic Robots and Console.

Several of these were announced publicly. Mercor, an AI recruiting platform, raised a Series A in 2024 led by Benchmark's Victor Lazarte and Bill Gurley. Press coverage named D'Angelo among the participating investors. Lovable, a Sweden-based AI startup, announced a $15 million pre-Series A in February 2025 led by Creandum, with D'Angelo among the angel investors. Tracxn lists him in the 2024 seed rounds of DatologyAI ($11.6M) and Protege ($10M). Crunchbase also shows him in MatX, whose Series A investors included Spark Capital.

His angel investments in AI sit alongside his operating work on Poe and his OpenAI board seat. Founders pitching him can expect him to know the current model and application landscape, and public records do not say how he uses that in diligence.

Investment focus

Crunchbase round labels show him in angel, pre-seed, seed and Series A rounds. The sectors in his recent activity are AI applications, AI infrastructure and data (DatologyAI, MatX), developer and enterprise software (Lovable, Console, Codegen), and AI for hiring and education (Mercor, Oboe, Outsmart). Dealroom's portfolio list also includes Pika, PlanetScale and CodeSignal.

Database entries show companies mainly in the United States, plus Lovable in Sweden. D'Angelo has not published a check size or a statement about what he looks for in a pitch, so neither is given here. Several of his rounds had well-known seed or Series A funds as leads, which suggests a founder with an institutional lead has a clearer route to him than one cold pitching.
