Jeff Dean
About Jeff Dean
Jeff Dean holds a B.S. from the University of Minnesota (1990) and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Washington (1996). He joined Google in 1999 and is known for work on MapReduce, Bigtable, Spanner and TensorFlow.
He joined Google X in 2011, led Google Brain from 2012, and was named head of Google's AI division in 2018. After Google Brain and DeepMind merged in 2023 he became Chief Scientist of Google DeepMind and Google Research, and he co-led the Gemini project.
In August 2026 he left Google after 27 years to co-found Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation that applies AI to automating scientific and engineering research. Google is a founding investor and cloud partner. Crunchbase still lists 0 companies founded for him, so it has not caught up with this.
Crunchbase counts 86 investments, with 0 lead investments and 0 exits. Fortune reported in July 2025 that he had backed 37 AI startups over the previous two years, mostly early-stage and often before a Series A, when companies were still in stealth or just leaving research labs. His angel investing started earlier. Fortune says he backed property-management startup Poplar Homes in 2016, and that he already had dozens of investments by 2022.
The same article says he was involved in the seed round of legal AI startup Harvey.
Crunchbase lists 66 AI investments since 2023. Fortune groups his AI bets into three themes: core AI tooling (developer platforms, LLM infrastructure, training efficiency), applications built natively for LLMs, and AI for science in biology, chemistry and genomics.
Recent rounds he joined include Standard Kernel's $20M seed in March 2026, led by Jump Capital, and SkyPilot's $20M seed in July 2026, led by Lux Capital. The Lounge deals desk also records G5 Labs' $14M seed in September 2026. Earlier examples include Periodic Labs' $300M seed (2025, led by Andreessen Horowitz) and Latent Labs' $50M round.
Public reporting points to pre-Series A and seed rounds in AI. The sectors are AI infrastructure and developer tooling, applied LLM products, and AI for science. He has joined rounds led by firms such as Jump Capital, Lux Capital and Radical Ventures, so he typically invests alongside institutional leads. His check size and any formal investment criteria are not public. Neither was found in the sources reviewed.
