About Ash Fontana

Background

Ash Fontana started his career in growth investing at Macquarie Capital in New York, after studying law at the University of Sydney. He then co-founded Topguest, a loyalty software platform whose clients included United Airlines, Hilton Worldwide and Virgin America. Topguest was acquired. Earlier conference bios describe it as Founders Fund-backed and say it sold in an eight-figure transaction 18 months after it was founded.

He then joined AngelList, where he launched the fundraising platform. Crunchbase says that platform now manages over $7B, while other bios cite different figures from different dates. An older conference bio says he built online investing there, created the first startup index fund, and ran the expansion into Europe and the UK.

He was a Managing Director at Zetta Venture Partners from 2015 to 2021 and is now a Special Advisor to the firm. In 2021 Penguin Random House published his book, "The AI-First Company: How to Compete and Win with Artificial Intelligence". Crunchbase lists him as based in San Francisco, California, and as holding 16 current board and advisor roles.

Angel investing track record

Ash made angel investments and led syndicates while working at AngelList. Public bios name Canva and Mixmax among them. His AngelList syndicate page lists Canva, Gridspace, Clearbit, Kaggle, Opendoor, Domino Data Lab, Tractable and Lilt, and it notes that private investments may not be shown. On that page he wrote that he saw hundreds of companies a week but invested in only a couple per year, so that he could get involved in critical decisions.

Crunchbase counts 6 investments, 6 portfolio companies, 1 lead investment and 0 exits. That is well below what his own pages and interviews describe, so treat it as a partial record. Investment dates are not consistently published, so none are given here.

AI investments

Ash co-launched Zetta Venture Partners with Mark Gorenberg. Zetta describes itself as the first venture fund focused on intelligent systems, investing in early-stage companies whose software learns from data. A 2019 O'Reilly Strata bio lists him as board member and lead investor in Kaggle, Invenia, Clearbit, Tractable and Focal Systems. An interview write-up says he was the first or largest investor in Canva, Kaggle and Tractable.

Since leaving Zetta's day-to-day work he has invested and advised on his own. His Crunchbase bio says he advises on data and ML, pricing and fundraising strategy. A podcast write-up says he also advises governments and corporates on AI and coaches partners at investment funds. His book sets out his framework for building companies that compete with AI.

Investment focus

His Crunchbase bio says he advises and invests in AI-First companies and helps them from inception onward. It says he invests anything from $20K to $20MM in a company. A podcast write-up repeats the $20K to $20M range.

The $1-5M figure in public bios describes Zetta. It was the fund's range for pre-traction AI and infrastructure startups with B2B business models, and it is not a statement about his current angel checks. He has said he invests in technology cycles rather than market cycles. A third-party profile says he looks closely at whether a company generates unique data that supports valuable predictions. Treat that as secondary reporting, and read his book and interviews for his own wording.

He is based in San Francisco. No geographic restrictions are stated in the sources reviewed.
