About Jack Altman

Background

Jack Altman co-founded the HR software company Lattice in 2015 with Eric Koslow. Before that he worked at Teespring, where he became vice president of business development. Lattice raised early capital from Thrive Capital and Khosla Ventures. It reached a reported $3 billion valuation by 2022.

In December 2023 he stepped down as Lattice CEO and stayed on as executive chairman. He said he wanted to return to early-stage company building. In 2024 he became a full-time venture capitalist. He is the brother of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Wikipedia reports that Sam is not an investor in Alt Capital II.

He wrote the 2021 book People Strategy and hosts the Uncapped with Jack Altman podcast, which is published by Alt Capital. Wikipedia lists his current role as general partner at Benchmark. Crunchbase lists 0 companies founded, but Lattice is a company he co-founded.

Angel investing track record

Before Alt Capital, Altman ran two funds under the name Altman Capital. Wikipedia reports that these funds put about $100 million into around 100 deals, and that Sam Altman joined some of those investments. Both brothers also had roles with Hydrazine Capital.

Crunchbase counts 32 investments for Altman as an angel in the dataset behind this profile. It shows 0 lead investments and 0 exits. A separate Crunchbase investor page lists 95 personal investments, so counts differ by how they are measured. Crunchbase also lists Altman among the investors in early rounds such as the Prelude Pre Seed and the TrueNorth Seed.

Alt Capital I was a $150 million fund raised in February 2024. As of September 2025 it had backed about 20 startups at Seed and Series A, and Altman had taken five board seats.

In 2024 Alt Capital launched an accelerator for business software startups building with AI. Sam Altman was a speaker and advisor. According to Wikipedia, the participating firms had access to Microsoft computing infrastructure with GPU clusters for training and running large language models.

Investment focus

Altman's public description of Alt Capital I is a fund that backed about 20 companies at Seed and Series A. He said Alt Capital II would use the same structure with somewhat larger checks. Sectors he names are AI, software and frontier tech. Crunchbase and his portfolio point to a focus on business software and AI applications, with some AI infrastructure and developer tooling such as LlamaIndex, Chroma and PostgresML.

Altman has not published a check size. Third-party databases estimate it. NFX Signal lists a range of $500K to $10M with a $2.5M sweet spot, and VC Sheet lists an average check of $1M to $10M. Treat these as estimates, not statements from him.

VC Sheet summarizes his approach as an operator-first lens with a test of whether a product will still be in use 10 or more years from now. On the Uncapped podcast he has discussed judging founders by their strongest traits rather than a lack of flaws.

Founders should also know about a change reported on Wikipedia. Alt Capital II did not collect capital from investors, and the fund said it would make no new investments. Altman keeps the board seats he already held, and other Alt Capital partners joined Benchmark. Current pitches would go through Benchmark, so confirm directly how he is investing now.
