Jason Calacanis
About Jason Calacanis
Jason Calacanis was born in Brooklyn and studied at Fordham University. His first company, Silicon Alley Reporter (Rising Tide Studios), came out of the New York dot-com era. In 2003 he co-founded the blog network Weblogs, Inc. with Brian Alvey. It included Engadget and Autoblog, and AOL bought it in 2005.
He later became Sequoia Capital's first scout and founded the search site Mahalo. Mahalo reportedly raised about $20 million. He also founded Inside.com, which publishes thematic newsletters.
Today he hosts the This Week in Startups podcast and co-hosts the All-In podcast with David Sacks, Chamath Palihapitiya and David Friedberg. He founded the LAUNCH brand and runs Founder.University, a pre-accelerator for year-zero startups.
All-In's profile says he has invested in more than 350 early-stage startups, including Uber, Thumbtack, Robinhood, Calm and Superhuman. Wikipedia also lists Wealthfront, Desktop Metal, DataStax and Trello. He began investing while working as a Sequoia scout. Published accounts differ on the year and size of his first Uber check, so we do not give a figure here.
In 2017 HarperCollins published his book Angel: How to Invest in Technology Startups. He also started the Open Angel Forum in 2009, an event where founders presented to angels. Wikipedia reports he raised a $10 million fund for startups that came out of the Launch conference, with David Sacks as a limited partner.
Crunchbase lists several recent AI-related deals by Calacanis. They include Neurometric AI (pre-seed), Millet AI (pre-seed), TaxGPT (seed) and 8090 Solutions (Series A). Crunchbase's timeline shows Millet AI raised from Calacanis and LAUNCH in August 2025. A third-party tracker lists Scale Social AI, a $1.3M pre-seed led by LAUNCH and Calacanis, in November 2025.
On LinkedIn he has written that he invests in 100 new startups a year. He often discusses AI infrastructure and agents on his podcasts.
Calacanis says he is an angel investor, not a venture capitalist. In one interview he said founder-product fit matters more than product-market fit at the earliest stage. Third-party databases describe LAUNCH as investing at pre-seed, seed and Series A. They list sectors including SaaS, consumer, fintech, AI and enterprise, mostly in the US with some deals in Canada and Europe.
He has not published a standard check size. Databases give differing ranges: VC Sheet shows $100K to $500K, while NFX Signal shows $100K to $5M. LAUNCH is also reported to run an accelerator and a syndicate. Treat these figures as estimates and confirm them directly.
