Altman confirms OpenAI is building a humanoid robot and targets a 2027 demo

Sam Altman told Fortune that OpenAI will build a humanoid robot, and argued that the brain matters more than the body. He said the harder work is the software that interprets sensor input, decides on an action and corrects itself when the real world interferes. OpenAI has not announced a robot, a consumer price, a subscription model, a release date or a robot-specific privacy framework. The company's robotics postings cover motion control, state estimation, actuator design and the machine learning infrastructure needed to train physical AI. Its earlier Dactyl project trained a robotic hand in simulation before it handled a Rubik's Cube. One posting says the near-term goal is general-purpose robots that help skilled workers build infrastructure. For AI founders, the signal is that a leading model lab is moving into hardware, which could raise competition for robotics and physical AI talent. Teams building agents should watch how embodied models change the tools available for real-world tasks.
