Nvidia's Huang pledges $2B in new European AI deals on top of $8B invested in the past year

Huang spoke in Paris on October 13 after meeting French President Emmanuel Macron. Bloomberg reports he also announced new funding for the French startups Doctolib, Genesis AI, Pigment and Entalpic, though per-company amounts were not given. Accounts differ on timing: Semafor and Quartz say he expects to unveil the $2 billion across deals within the next week, while Bloomberg describes it as announced during the tour. The pledge arrives as Europe trails at the frontier. Semafor cites the Stanford AI Index count of 59 notable models from the US and 35 from China, against one each for France and the UK. Huang's line was that Europe needs to get in the race. Semafor also notes, citing Politico, that a German search engine used by European governments plans to drop France's Mistral for a Chinese open-source model. For founders, Nvidia is acting as a strategic investor that also sells the scarce input. European startups raising now can expect an investor with chip allocation, partner introductions and a stake in their growth, which changes whom to pitch.
