State of AI in the Enterprise 2026 (Deloitte, January 2026): only one in five firms has mature agent governance
Deloitte's annual enterprise survey, fielded with 3,235 senior leaders in 24 countries, catches organizations between experimentation and transformation. Worker access to AI tools rose 50% in 2025, and the number of companies with at least 40% of AI projects in production is expected to double within six months. Benefits are still mostly efficiency: 66% cite productivity gains, 53% better decisions and 40% lower costs, but only 20% report revenue growth even though 74% hope for it. Twice as many leaders as last year report transformative impact, yet only 34% are reimagining their business. The gaps are where the opportunities sit. Just one in five companies has a mature governance model for autonomous agents, the AI skills gap is named the biggest barrier to integration, and most firms respond by educating workers rather than redesigning roles. Physical AI is at 58% at least limited use and expected to reach 80% in two years. Founders selling into enterprises should expect buyers that have budget and access but lack governance, workflow redesign and talent.
