Atarraya makes the Shrimpbox, a modular shrimp farm built into a cargo container. Its AI and automation system remotely monitors water quality, controls temperature and oxygen, and feeds the shrimp, and the company says it uses 98% less water than traditional shrimp farming. The company grew out of the Mexican aquaculture startup Maricultura Vigas and came out of stealth in August 2022 with a $3.9M Series A, bringing total funding to about $10M at that point. It opened its first US farm in Indianapolis, where the first harvest came in October 2022, and launched a Shrimpbox Air facility in Plainfield, New Jersey in November 2024 backed by a $2M contract. In August 2025 it raised $5M led by Animo Ventures, after quarterly sales doubled and gross margins went above 50%.
