About Bert Baeck

Background

Bert Baeck is a serial entrepreneur based in Antwerp, Belgium. He holds a Master's degree in Computer Science and a Master's degree in Micro-Electronics from Ghent University. By his own account, he worked at Covestro and Lanxess for a few years before starting his first company.

He founded TrendMiner, a self-service industrial analytics company, and served as its CEO. Software AG acquired it in 2018. He then joined the European VC firm SmartFin Capital as a partner. His Crunchbase bio says he was there for three years, and a 2018 press interview announced him as a partner in the firm's second fund.

He is now founder and CEO of Timeseer.AI, which Dealroom describes as a DataOps software company for time series data, founded in March 2020. Several of his TrendMiner colleagues are on its founding team. Latka lists Timeseer.AI as bootstrapped with no outside funding. His stated areas of expertise include data observability, streaming data, IoT and AIoT, industrial software and data governance. He describes himself as a patent holder.

Angel investing track record

Public data on his personal angel investing is thin. Crunchbase counts one personal investment and one portfolio company, with no lead investments and no exits. That investment is Hyperfox, a pre-seed round dated February 1, 2023, in which he took part alongside two other investors. Crunchbase hides the amount.

AI investments

No public AI-specific angel deals could be confirmed beyond what is above. In a Medium post titled "AI Sobering", he wrote that his work at SmartFin Capital involved conversations with more than 150 international AI companies. He drew on that work to discuss deal sizes, valuations and why some AI companies succeed while others do not yet.

Investment focus

He has not published a personal investment thesis, stage range or check size, so none is listed here. His public expertise points to B2B and industrial technology: AI and ML, IoT and sensor data, time series data, DataOps, data observability and data governance. SmartFin Capital, where he was a partner, describes itself as an early-stage fund for smart technology companies. Crunchbase lists his region as the EU and EMEA.
