About Christoph Janz

Background

Christoph Janz is a co-founder and partner at Point Nine, the early-stage fund he co-founded in 2011. His own descriptions of himself call him an internet entrepreneur turned angel investor turned VC. Public profiles place him in Germany. Point Nine is based in Berlin.

Before investing he co-founded two internet companies. DealPilot.com was founded in 1997, funded by Bertelsmann and later acquired by Shopping.com. Crunchbase lists him as co-founder and COO there from 1997 to 2000. Pageflakes, a personalized start page, was founded in 2005 and funded by Balderton Capital. It was acquired by LiveUniverse, and Crunchbase lists him as co-founder and Chief Product Officer from 2005 to 2008. NFX also lists him as a non-executive co-founder of Friendity.de, which it says was acquired by a top-three German ISP.

In June 2011 TechCrunch reported that Team Europe Ventures was being rebranded as Point Nine Capital and that Janz was joining its leadership team. He and Pawel Chudzinski led the firm as Managing Directors. He writes about SaaS metrics, fundraising and AI on his Medium blog and on the earlier blog The Angel VC.

Angel investing track record

By his own account he became an angel investor in 2008 and, through that, found Zendesk, Clio and FreeAgent. TechCrunch's 2011 announcement listed Zendesk, FreeAgent Central, Clio and Propertybase among his investments. NFX also lists Momox and Geckoboard among his advisory and investor roles. Crunchbase shows him as investor and advisor at Zendesk since May 2008.

Crunchbase counts 12 personal investments across 9 portfolio companies, 0 of them as lead investor. It lists 4 exits, one of them by IPO, and 3 companies founded. FreeAgent appears as a listed exit. His Crunchbase bio says he has invested in more than 20 SaaS startups, so the Crunchbase figures cover only part of his activity. Angel rounds on Crunchbase include Server Density and HipWay, and its most recent listed investment is the Series A of Valendo Health.

Since 2011 much of his investing has gone through Point Nine. NFX lists 47 investments on record for him and a stated range of $580K to $3.5M. NFX also notes recent rounds in Polar Analytics, Findable, Root Global, CloudTalk, The Brief, Mavenoid and Lottielab.

AI investments

Janz has said that he was surprised by how well ChatGPT performed. In an Inside Intercom interview with Des Traynor he discussed what generative AI means for SaaS companies and early-stage SaaS investors. His bio, which reads "A as in AI-enhanced B2B software", includes AI within his SaaS focus.

His X profile lists him as a seed investor in Poolside and Vercept, alongside Algolia, Contentful, Factorial, incident.io, Loom, NexHealth, Typeform and Zendesk. His Medium page features a Point Nine post titled "Why We Invested in Anthropic". It says the firm, known mostly for B2B SaaS, has also backed startups working on autonomous navigation. A separate essay of his argues that AI agents point to a strong period for AI startups rather than an AI winter. In January he published a post about vibe coding a knowledge hub in 13 days.

The sources reviewed do not give investment years or check sizes for the AI companies, so none are stated here.

Investment focus

Point Nine describes itself as an early-stage firm focused on SaaS, enterprise software and B2B marketplaces. Third-party profiles list pre-seed and seed as his stages. On NFX the sectors he is most interested in include vertical SaaS, bottom-up land-and-expand products and strong technical co-founders, with startups from anywhere in the world. The same profile lists copycats and over-hyped pre-seed rounds as things he is not interested in.

NFX lists an investment range of $580K to $3.5M with a $1.5M sweet spot. This comes from a third-party profile, not from Janz, and it describes Point Nine as an institution. Treat it as indicative and confirm it directly. Janz has also written about investing outside software, for example in a European protein crop called aardaker, so the focus is not strictly limited to B2B software.
