Dharmesh Shah
About Dharmesh Shah
Dharmesh Shah is co-founder and CTO of HubSpot. He started the company in 2006 with Brian Halligan, and it is listed on the NYSE as HUBS. Before HubSpot he founded and ran Pyramid Digital Solutions, an enterprise software company for financial services. He bootstrapped it with under $10,000, and SunGard Data Systems acquired it in 2005.
Shah writes the OnStartups.com blog and community, which began as part of his MIT Sloan thesis work on software startups. He co-authored the book Inbound Marketing, published HubSpot's Culture Code in 2013, and was named an Inc. Founders 40 honoree in 2016. He holds a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and an M.S. in the Management of Technology from MIT.
More recently he has built agent.ai, a marketplace and network for AI agents, and publishes the simple.ai newsletter, which his X profile says has more than 2 million subscribers. He also bought the chat.com domain and later sold it to OpenAI. He is based in the Boston area.
Shah began angel investing after selling Pyramid, and HubSpot's investor relations page describes him as an angel investor in over 60 startups. Later profiles put the number higher. PitchBook describes him as an angel investor in over 90 startups. Counts differ between Crunchbase, PitchBook, Dealroom and other databases, so treat any single figure as approximate.
In a 2021 interview with Sramana Mitra he said he had made 95 angel investments. He named Coinbase as a big hit and said he was the first money in Okta, Dropbox and Stack Overflow. Other early-stage names tied to him in public profiles include Gusto, AngelList and Wefunder.
In that interview he also described how he works. He said he solves for time rather than money, never leads deals, historically does not make follow-on investments, and for most deals has never met the founders. Founders should read this as a description of his past practice. He may have changed it since.
Crunchbase lists 15 AI investments by Shah since 2023. The AI portfolio on Crunchbase includes Mem0, Lovable, Bluebirds, JustAI, Owner, Recraft, The Network, AgentMail, Composio, Persana AI (acquired), Defog and Willow Voice. Crunchbase's activity feed also shows Neurometric AI (a pre-seed round), CrewAI, Harmony, Twenty and D3 among recent rounds with his name attached.
The feed dates several rounds he is attached to. AgentMail raised a seed round on March 10, 2026. Mem0 raised a Series A on October 28, 2025. Lovable, Willow Voice, Owner and Composio rounds were listed between April and July 2025. The feed shows round dates, so these are not necessarily the dates he wrote his check.
His interest in AI also shows in his own building. On X he wrote that 2024 was the year of Agent AI and that he had been working on it late at night, and that work became agent.ai.
Public profiles describe Shah as an angel who backs software companies, especially enterprise software, SaaS, developer tools and AI. One third-party aggregator, Shizune, reports that of 94 tracked investments, about 52% were seed, 18% Series A, 11% pre-seed and 9% angel rounds. It lists the United States, Canada, India and Sweden as countries of investment. These figures come from an aggregator and are not statements from Shah.
On what he looks for, his own public remarks are about process more than criteria. In the 2021 interview he said he does not lead and historically skips follow-ons. A 20VC episode with him covers his angel investing rules, including no founder meetings and no due diligence, and his view that SMB is a strong market for founders.
No check size has been confirmed by Shah himself. Aggregator figures vary, so this page does not state one. Founders should not assume he takes meetings, and should expect an investment decision to rest mostly on a written pitch.
