Eric Ries
About Eric Ries
Eric Ries created the Lean Startup methodology and wrote The Lean Startup, The Startup Way and The Leader's Guide. He was co-founder and CTO of IMVU, and he has been an entrepreneur-in-residence at Harvard Business School, IDEO and Pivotal.
He founded the Long-Term Stock Exchange (LTSE), a U.S. national securities exchange for companies focused on long-term governance, where he is Executive Chair. He is also a co-founder of Answer.AI, an AI R&D lab. His book Incorruptible: Why Good Companies Go Bad... and How Great Companies Stay Great is due in 2026. He hosts The Eric Ries Show podcast.
Public databases disagree on how many investments he has made, probably because they track different deal types. Crunchbase lists 66 personal investments, PitchBook lists 106, and Tracxn lists 23 portfolio companies. Tracxn dates his first tracked investment to 2011 (WP Engine).
Tracxn lists these deals: Mentava (seed, April 2022), Manara (seed, May 2022), Autio (seed, March 2023), Aug X Labs (Series A, September 2023) and Harmony Intelligence (seed, March 2025). It lists Asana among his exits.
On the Lounge deals desk, Eric Ries is recorded as an investor in the Pathfinder AI seed round of $4M (March 2026). Gradient and Reach Capital led the round, according to Crunchbase and Pathfinder's founders. Pathfinder builds an AI agent that manages the homeschooling experience for families, with a platform and payment card to help families use state education funds.
He is also a co-founder of Answer.AI, an AI R&D lab. Kalendar AI appears among his listed investments on a third-party investor directory.
One investor directory describes him as investing mainly at pre-seed and seed. Tracxn shows his portfolio mostly in the United States, with a few companies elsewhere, across sectors including enterprise applications and fintech.
On the First Funders podcast he said he likes to write checks of $10,000 or less and does not like large checks, though he has deviated from that. He also said he invests to make money and likes the impact. He has not published a formal check-size range.
