About Grant Verstandig
Grant Verstandig founded the digital health company Audax in 2010, which became Rally Health. UnitedHealth Group acquired a majority stake in 2014. From 2017 to 2021 he was UnitedHealth Group's Chief Digital Officer, and he is now Senior Advisor to its CEO. The Verstandig Family Foundation says he sold Rally to UnitedHealth for $4 billion.
In 2020 he started Red Cell Partners, a McLean, Virginia investment and incubation firm. He is its Founder, Chairman and CEO. Red Cell describes itself as a venture studio that builds technology-led health care, defense and cyber companies from the ground up. It reports raising $600+ million across the firm and its incubations.
Verstandig is also co-founder and Executive Chairman of Andesite, Zephyr AI and DEFCON AI, and co-founder and CEO of Trase, an AI agent platform. His bio also lists him as a co-founder of Epirus, an AI-enabled power management company for directed energy defense. He is a former senior advisor to the National Security Agency. Crunchbase lists two personal investments for Verstandig: Proxy Foods (seed) and nTop (Series C). Most of his investing runs through Red Cell Partners, so his personal angel record is short in public sources. He is listed by name among the individual investors in the 2026 Proxy Foods AI seed round.
Verstandig is a named investor in Proxy Foods AI's $6M seed round, announced on August 5, 2026. The round was led by Ted Leonsis. Proxy Foods AI sells an agentic AI platform that helps food and beverage companies take products from concept through formulation and commercialization. Its listed customers include Barilla and CAVA.
The Lounge deals desk shows two entries for this round, Proxy Foods Seed and Proxy Foods AI Seed. Press coverage describes one company and one round.
Through Red Cell, he has also co-founded AI-focused companies. These include Zephyr AI (drug discovery and precision medicine), DEFCON AI (logistics and mobility decision analysis), Andesite (cyber) and Trase (AI agents for administrative workflows). Red Cell built these companies. They are not outside angel checks.
Red Cell's stated focus is health care, defense and cyber. A 2026 profile quotes Verstandig on the urgency of fixing systems in crisis, and says Red Cell aims to stand up one or two new companies a year. His Proxy Foods investment shows he also backs seed-stage companies outside those areas, in his case a food-tech AI company. No personal check size, stage rules or stated angel criteria are public.
