About Jeffrey Bezos

Background

Jeffrey (Jeff) Bezos founded Amazon and stepped down as its CEO in 2021. Since then he has put more of his attention into Blue Origin and his other ventures. He also owns The Washington Post, which he bought in 2013.

He invests through Bezos Expeditions, founded in 2005 and based on Mercer Island, Washington. It manages his personal investments and backs both early and late stage companies across sectors. In November 2025 he became co-CEO of Project Prometheus, an AI startup focused on physical AI for manufacturing. It has reported $6.2B in initial funding.

Angel investing track record

Bezos's best-known early bet is Google. He put $250,000 into it in 1998. Through Bezos Expeditions he later backed Airbnb and Uber, both in 2011. He also backed Behance in its first outside round in 2012, and early investments include Twitter, Stack Overflow and Nextdoor.

Other holdings reported across the portfolio include Workday, Grail (a 2016 investment of $100M), and Mark43 (Series B in 2016). He does not publish a full list of private investments.

AI investments

In January 2026 Bezos took part in the $480M seed round for humans&. The round was reported at a $4.48B valuation and led by SV Angel and Georges Harik. Nvidia, GV and Emerson Collective also joined. Humans& was founded by former Anthropic, xAI and Google researchers. It is building AI meant to strengthen human collaboration rather than replace workers.

Bezos Expeditions invested in Perplexity's $73.6M Series B in January 2024 and its $63M follow-on in April 2024. In February 2024 it joined Figure AI's $675M round, a humanoid robotics company. Bezos was also reported in a $300M Series A for Skild AI, which builds AI for robots.

Separately, Amazon, the company he founded, has invested in Anthropic since September 2023. That is a corporate investment, not a personal one.

Investment focus

Bezos Expeditions backs companies from seed to late stage. One report put about 70 percent of the office's investments in technology. Recent AI activity covers foundation model labs, AI search, robotics and physical AI. Portfolio companies are mostly in the United States, with a few in Canada, Europe, Latin America and Indonesia. No check size or formal investment criteria have been made public, and the firm does not publish a pitch process.
