About John Abele
John Abele (Amherst College, class of 1959, physics and philosophy) co-founded the medical device company Boston Scientific with Peter Nicholas in 1979. Amherst describes him as its retired founding chairman. He had joined the contract R&D firm Medi-Tech in 1969, before the 1979 founding.
He has received the TCT Career Achievement Award (2015) and an Amherst honorary degree (2011). He also set up the Argosy Foundation, a family philanthropy. PitchBook lists 10 investments by Abele as an individual angel, with 2 exits. These run from Neumitra (seed, 2012) and Knowledgehook (seed, 2016) to SOND (2026). Crunchbase lists 7 investments and names SOND as the latest.
Most of the companies are in healthcare, medical devices, monitoring equipment and education software. Check sizes and ownership stakes are not disclosed in the sources reviewed.
The only AI-related round we could confirm is SOND. SOND is a Boston startup that came out of stealth on May 27, 2026 with a $7M seed round led by E14 Fund. Crosslink Capital, Ubiquity Ventures, Alumni Ventures, Meach Cove Capital and Abele also took part.
SOND's Dreambuds are in-ear sleep earbuds that capture 12 physiological signals. They stream the data to a cloud-based AI sleep coach that selects or generates audio programmes. Abele has not publicly described an AI investment thesis.
His recorded deals are mostly pre-seed and seed. The exception is a Series B in Groundwork BioAg. Sectors are medical devices, digital health, health IT, education software and agriculture technology. Most companies are in the United States.
NFX Signal's profile of Abele gives an investment range of $5K to $50K with a $25K sweet spot. That figure comes from a third-party profile, not from a statement by Abele, so treat it as indicative.
