John Stecher
About John Stecher
John Stecher is the Chief Technology Officer of Blackstone. Blackstone's site says he is responsible for all aspects of technology across the firm, advises its investment teams and acts as a resource to portfolio companies on technology matters. Blackstone hired him from Barclays in 2020, and he holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MS in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota.
Before Blackstone he was Managing Director, Chief Technology Officer and Chief Innovation Officer at Barclays, which he joined in August 2017. Before that he held senior management and engineering roles at Goldman Sachs, where he built the Marcus-branded consumer finance division. Earlier he spent several years at IBM as a Senior Technical Staff Member and IBM Master Inventor, with over 45 patents.
His LinkedIn activity includes a recent post about a new chapter that says he loves building and investing in equal measure. We could not confirm from the sources found whether his role at Blackstone has changed.
Crunchbase lists one personal investment for Stecher, in Build. In his LinkedIn post he says he will continue to invest in AI founders and companies via Elora Capital. We did not find public details on Elora Capital's size, structure or other holdings, or a full list of his angel investments.
In June 2026, Build announced an $8.5M seed round led by Index Ventures, with Pebblebed, Puzzle Ventures and Tiny.vc also participating. Press coverage names Stecher among the angels, alongside OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar and senior figures from OpenAI, Meta AI Research and Google Maps. Build sells AI-run site sourcing, technical due diligence, power assessment and early design for infrastructure and real estate development.
Separately, Blackstone led a round in TextQL, an AI data analysis company. Fortune quoted Stecher saying Blackstone is both an investor in and a customer of TextQL. That was a Blackstone investment, not a personal one.
The only confirmed personal check is a seed-stage AI company applying software and agents to physical-world industries. On an a16z podcast in 2024, Stecher discussed how he decides whether to build technology in-house or partner with startups, what he looks for in early stage companies, and how AI affects real estate, credit, energy and ecommerce. He has said publicly that he invests in AI founders. His check size, stage limits and geographic focus are not public.
