About Philipp Heltewig

Background

Philipp Heltewig is a German-Australian entrepreneur based in Düsseldorf. He studied Information Systems at the University of Münster from 2002 to 2007, including a year at QUT in Brisbane. Earlier roles included IT project manager at netzkern, a research role at SAP Australia, and 2007 to 2016 at Sitecore. At Sitecore he moved from regional account manager to managing director, SVP Sales for global markets and then CIO. He set up Sitecore's Australia and New Zealand operations.

In 2016 he co-founded Cognigy with Sascha Poggemann and Benjamin Mayr. The company began with the idea of a speaking toy and moved into enterprise conversational AI for customer service. It raised funding from investors including DN Capital, Insight Partners and Eurazeo.

NiCE agreed to acquire Cognigy in 2025. ITWire reports the deal value as US$955 million. The acquisition closed in September 2025, and Heltewig is now Chief AI Officer at NiCE and General Manager of NiCE Cognigy.

Angel investing track record

Little of his angel activity is public. Crunchbase lists two personal investments, and the only one it names is Qontext. Tracxn lists one angel investment, also Qontext. Crunchbase and TheOrg also show him as an investor in finleap since December 2014. They list a board seat at CluedIn from February 2015 and a board advisor role at Uniform from August 2020. They also show an earlier investor role at M2O Publishing from 2011 to 2013.

AI investments

His one confirmed AI investment is Qontext, a Berlin startup building an independent context layer for AI. Its pre-seed was announced on 5 February 2026. HV Capital led the round and Zero Prime Ventures took part. Qontext named Heltewig among its angels, alongside founders and operators from n8n, neo4j, Celonis and make.com. Press reports state the round as $2.7 million. Lounge's deals desk lists it as €2.7M.

Investment focus

The public record is thin. His only confirmed AI angel investment is a pre-seed round in enterprise AI infrastructure at a Berlin company. Tracxn lists his top sectors as High Tech and Enterprise Applications and his location focus as Germany, but that rests on a single deal. He has not publicly stated a check size or a formal investment thesis. His operating background is in enterprise software, conversational AI and customer experience.
