About Scott McNealy
Scott McNealy co-founded Sun Microsystems in 1982 with Vinod Khosla, Bill Joy and Andy Bechtolsheim, and served as its CEO for 22 years. He has a BA from Harvard and an MBA from Stanford.
In 2004, while still at Sun, he founded Curriki, a free online education service that later became an independent nonprofit. In 2011 he co-founded Wayin, a social intelligence and visualization company based in Denver, and he stepped down as its CEO in 2016.
His X profile describes him as chairman of LittleHorse and Curriki, and a former chairman and CEO of Sun. Crunchbase also lists him as a partner at Flume Ventures.
PitchBook lists 18 investments for McNealy as an individual angel, and Crunchbase counts 20. The entries run from Koan (seed, October 2019) through to Sandstone (January 2026).
Other entries on PitchBook include Nightfall AI (2019), Aviso (2020), Lambda (2021), Single Origin (2021), Wevr (2022), detections.ai (2024) and Soteris (2025). Tracxn also credits him with Vungle and Drive.fm (seed, 2018). Deal sizes and his check sizes are not disclosed in these profiles.

McNealy was also described as the driving force behind the investor group in a $23.5M round for Positron, a US startup building FPGA-based servers for AI inference.
On CNBC he said that people are spending heavily on AI because they want to be survivors, and that he is a big believer in seeing who has staying power.
Tracxn says his portfolio centres on enterprise applications and enterprise infrastructure, and that his investments are in the United States. His recent deals span legal AI, AI inference hardware, security and network software. He has backed companies from seed stage onward.
